The importance of regular field mowing
Regular mowing for agricultural fields & pastures serves several purposes, beyond maintaining a tidy look to large grass fields. Field mowing can help maintain a healthy pasture balance by encouraging the growth of native grasses while reducing the growth of unwanted weeds, invasive species and fast growing brush.
The Pacific Northwest is home to some of the hardiest and invasive forms of brush such as blackberries, scotch broom, salmon berries and soap berries, which tend to eventually grow in large, expansive thickets and prohibit livestock grazing in that area. If neglected, invasive brush can quickly spread and consume large portions of your field, complicating use of it.
Additionally, regular mowing helps to improve the soil conditions of the area as the cut grasses break down and recompose, providing a natural compost, which provides nutrients back to the field in addition to improving quality of the soil.
We offer flexible mowing options
We offer our mowing services at an hourly flat rate or if you prefer, we can give you a quote based on the size of your area, the slope of the area (heavily sloped areas are slower to mow) and the height of the grass or vegetation. (very tall grass is slower to mow) For customers with larger fields, we usually mowing in the early spring, before the grass becomes too tall, early spring and early fall mowing.
Recommended field mowing schedule for larger pastures
Mow 1: Early spring (March/April). This mow is the most critical as native grass and vegetation comes out of dormancy in late February. Aided by warmer temperatures and the usual heavy rainfalls of the Pacific Northwest, native grass and brush will have an explosive growth cycle.
This is even more critical if your field has invasive brush issues, such as Black berries, salmon berries, soap berries or Scotch Broom. Cutting the brush early into its growth cycle will temporarily retard the vegetation, forcing it to put its stored energy into growth, rather than preparing to go to flower/seed/fruiting, which can further spread the problem, as local bird populations and other wildlife will be attracted to the berries and spread the seed.
Mow 2: Early summer (June). The second recommended mowing will be in June. Spring conditions will likely have the grass height fairly tall. Invasive brush will also be attempting to regrow and will be attempting to flower and seed soon. A mow at this stage will terminate the seeding cycle for the year, preventing its spread.
Mow 3: Early fall (September). The third recommended mow of the year will be in early fall, mid to late September. During the hot summer months, native grasses will have gone to seed and become dormant and will need to begin the process of storing energy for the following year. Cutting the grass in the early fall, before the heavy seasonal rainfalls will help spread the grass seed as well as helping promote the grass to benefit from the milder fall temperatures and heavy rainfall. For invasive brush, such as blackberries, a third cutting will eliminate its ability to regrow before winter, which will rob it of its opportunity to store up more energy for the following year.

Frequently asked questions:

Our machine needs a minimum of a 5 foot opening in any gates or fences and adequate access to mow the area. Please move any objects or movable items in the mowing path before we arrive to allow for the job to proceed in a timely manner.

When we arrive to complete the mow, please let us know about any known obstacles that may be hidden in the grass, including fallen fencing, stumps and large rocks or boulders.

Please remove any other items from the mowing path before we arrive. If there are any hidden hazards, such as holes or marsh areas, please notify us of the locations when we arrive.

In most cases, we can mow most areas with slopes or steep hills. Be aware that they will slow the progress of the mow as caution must be taken.

Our agricultural mower can mow grass up to 6 feet in height. Please be aware that grass in excess of 4 feet will slow the progress of the mow. For this reason, we usually recommend field mowing in the early spring before it gets taller than 4 feet.

For dormant fields, we usually recommend a mowing in the early spring in April, a mowing in June/July and if required, a final mowing in the fall, late September or Early October. 3 times per year is usually sufficient to maintain a healthy pasture and keep invasive species under control.

Yes, we can offer a discounted set price for you once the initial mow has been completed and we know how long the mow takes, based on a spring, summer and fall mow.

In ideal conditions of mostly flat terrain with the grass 3-4 feet high, we can usually mow 3/4 - 1 acre per hour, so your 5 acre parcel will take approximately 6 to 6.5 hours to complete. If you have grass taller than 3-4 feet or if your property has large slopes or steep portions, it will take longer to complete.

We can mow most native brush, including tall thickets of blackberry, soap berry, salmon berry up to 1" thick. Provided that the area is just brush and not fallen trees, large branches or other obstacles, it can be mowed. Alternatively, you may want to consider our permanent brush removal service where we remove the vegetation by the roots.
